Wooden Weather Vanes

May 22nd, 2008

Weather vanes, also known as wind vanes are used to detect the direction of the wind. Weather vanes are usually attached to an elevated object, mostly rooftops to indicate the course of the wind. The weather vane has evolved as a beautiful collectible and unusual piece of folk art. It is often found in the shape of cockerels, popularly known as weathercocks. However, other shapes such as arrows, pigs, angels, cows and multiple other designs can now be found in the form of weather vanes. They are made of different materials such as copper, brass, sheets of metal and wood.

Wooden vanes are part of the traditional architecture of weather vanes. Shapes of different animals, birds or statues are carved out on the wood to define the form of vanes. Weight and measurement of the wooden weather vane depend on their shape and size. Wooden skillets are used to mount the finished piece at the rooftop. Apart from placing them on rooftops they can also be placed on other places in the house, such as kitchen plate stands or fireplace mantels for display purposes.

Weather vanes can be made at home if required. The shape and form of the weather vane may be selected after studying sample weathervanes. Then an outline of the design chosen may be stenciled on the piece of wood. Thereafter the wood is cut out according to the shape stenciled on it. Rough edges and splinters may be smoothened out by sand papering them. A coat of varnish and polish will preserve their natural wood color. Different paint finishes with vibrant color schemes may be used according to personal choice.

Several craft stores stock readymade wooden kits in imaginative shapes and sizes. These may be assembled according to instructions provided to lend varied looks and appearances. Color kits are also available to embellish the appearance of weather vanes. Once the vane is ready, it just needs to be attached to a wooden dowel and fitted to the preferred position.

Antique collection of wooden weather vanes can be found online and local craft stores. However, buyers are advised to check and compare the rates before buying. Rates may vary according to the material, size, condition and vintage of antique weather vanes.

Rustic Log Bedroom Furniture

May 22nd, 2008

So you are looking for that rustic western look and need to find some authentic rustic log bedroom furniture?

Quite often when new home owners are building their log home, or mountain lodge or it can simply be a traditional style home with high ceilings and spacious rooms, they are needing the right furniture to compliment the rooms.

The ‘western rustic log furniture look’ has a warm, soothing effect and together with a few bear hide rugs or other types of skins thrown across the floor or hung across the banisters creates a an atmosphere that you will love.

Top it off with a beautiful hand quilted Amish quilt for the bed and a rustic hickory rocker in the corner and you are all set!

There are a variety of rustic log furniture makers scattered throughout the US but in the western states and especially in Montana, you will find a lot of rustic log bedroom furniture made from the lodgepole pine that grows well here. It is known for it’s durability and strength. (the native Americans used these pines for teepees many years ago, hence the name ‘lodgepole pine’!)

Some people prefer to keep it unfinished so as to keep the rustic look but it is best to put some sort of oil or stain on it as pine is a soft wood and oil stains from constant use will eventually leave smudges.

So maybe the answer for you is to find a nice rustic log bed, several log night stands or end tables, a solid pine dresser, perhaps a rustic pine armoire ( which you could use as an entertainment center as well), a rustic log or hickory rocker set in the corner(the Amish hickory rockers are the most comfortable rockers I have EVER sat in - and I have had one most of my life!:)..

Oh, and grab a few handmade rugs - there again, I like the Amish handmade rugs for their durability and appearance.

I have a feeling when you are done furnishing your bedroom with beautiful rustic log bedroom furniture - you will want to start on the rest of your house!

…Like perhaps several rustic log barstools in the kitchen or a log futon for the living area….Have fun! =)
